Restoring from Backup

When to restore

Restore from a backup when you move to a new computer, reinstall the app, or recover after a system reset or device loss. You need the backup file you created (e.g. from USB or external drive) and your master password.

Steps to restore

1. Install the app

Download and install Local Legacy Vault on the new or reset device. Open the app.

2. Choose restore

When prompted (or from the main screen), choose the option to restore from a backup file. Select your .vault backup file from the USB or folder where you saved it.

3. Enter your master password

Type the same master password you used when you created the vault. The backup is encrypted; only this password can unlock it.

4. Confirm

After the app verifies the file and password, your vault will open with all entries and attachments. You can continue using the app and create new backups from this device.

Tip: Keep at least one backup off your main computer. See Backing Up Your Vault for how to create backups and How to Get Started and Load Your License if you need to re-enter your license on the new device.
