Why back up?
Your vault lives only on your device. If the device is lost, damaged, or replaced, the only way to get your data back is from a backup. Backups are encrypted with your master password, so they stay private even if the backup drive is lost or stolen.
What you need
- A USB drive or external hard drive (or another safe location on your computer).
- Your master password — you will need it to restore from the backup later.
How to create a backup
1 Open Settings
In Local Legacy Vault, open Settings (gear icon or menu).
2 Choose Backup
Select the option to back up your vault (e.g. "Back up vault" or "Export backup").
3 Pick a location
Choose your USB drive, external drive, or a folder you use for backups. The app will create an encrypted backup file.
4 Store it safely
Keep the backup in a safe place. Tell your family where it is and that they will need your master password to open it.
How often to back up
Back up after you add or change important information. Many people back up monthly or after major updates. If you add a lot of entries at once, back up right after.
Tip: Keep at least one backup off your main computer (e.g. on a USB in a safe or with a trusted person). That way a single device failure doesn't take everything. See How to Get Started and Load Your License for how to restore on a new device.
